Attendance is strict, the card comes from the Department of Labor, and a missed hour can mean repeating the class. Here is how it actually works so your first OSHA 10 is your only OSHA 10.
What OSHA 10 is, and is not
The OSHA 10-Hour class is part of the OSHA Outreach Training Program, delivered by authorized Outreach trainers. It is an orientation to recognizing and avoiding common workplace hazards, either Construction or General Industry depending on the class. Two honest clarifications up front. The program is voluntary under federal law, though many employers, project owners, unions, and some jurisdictions require it as a condition of work. And completion is not an OSHA certification, license, or endorsement. Successful students receive an official Department of Labor OSHA Outreach student course completion card, which is a different and more specific thing than the way people casually describe it.
The attendance rules that actually matter
Protect every required contact hour
- All 10 contact hours are required. The Outreach Program does not allow skipped topics or partial credit. Arrive on time every session, because a participant who misses required instruction may not be eligible for the card.
- Register with your exact legal name. Your Department of Labor card is issued to the roster name. Fix typos before class, not after.
- Multi-day schedule. Ten contact hours plus breaks will not fit a single standard day, so most classes run across two days. Plan work and childcare around the full schedule.
What the class covers

OSHA 10 Construction
Construction classes emphasize the Focus Four hazards: falls, struck-by incidents, caught-in or caught-between hazards, and electrocution. Additional subjects may include personal protective equipment, health hazards, material handling, scaffolds, ladders, excavations, and other risks relevant to the group.
OSHA 10 General Industry
General Industry classes address core workplace hazards such as hazard communication, walking-working surfaces, electrical safety, emergency action plans, personal protective equipment, and other topics relevant to healthcare, manufacturing, warehousing, facilities, and similar workplaces.
What to bring and wear
Normal, comfortable clothing is fine for a classroom Outreach course. Bring a way to take notes, water, and patience for the required hours. If your class includes site-specific or hands-on additions, we tell you at registration.
After class: your DOL card
Card processing and interim documentation
Cards are processed through the authorizing training organization after the class ends and all requirements are met, then delivered to you. Processing takes time, so if a jobsite needs proof immediately, ask us about interim documentation of completion. Federal OSHA Outreach cards do not expire, but an employer, project owner, or jurisdiction can require more recent training, and some do on a fixed cycle.
