ACLS Provider vs. ACLS Renewal: The Short Answer
The full ACLS Provider course is the better starting point when you are new to ACLS, have been away from advanced resuscitation for a significant period, or want more time to work through the major concepts and team-based scenarios. An ACLS Update / Renewal course is designed for experienced clinicians who are already comfortable with the core material and are prepared for a more focused review and assessment experience.
The key distinction is readiness. A shorter renewal-format class should not be treated as a shortcut around preparation. If rhythm recognition, pharmacology, high-quality BLS, or the major ACLS decision pathways feel unfamiliar, the full provider format may be the better educational choice.
Who Should Consider the Full ACLS Provider Course?
Consider the full provider course if you are taking ACLS for the first time, returning after a long gap, changing into a clinical role where ACLS knowledge will be used more frequently, or simply want a more comprehensive instructor-led experience.
The current American Heart Association ACLS program focuses on high-quality BLS, recognition and intervention for cardiac arrest and peri-arrest conditions, team dynamics, communication, and application of evidence-based advanced life support concepts. The full provider format gives instructors more opportunity to build those concepts together instead of assuming that the learner is already fluent in them.
Who Should Consider ACLS Update / Renewal?
The renewal pathway is generally a better fit for experienced healthcare professionals who have previously completed ACLS and have maintained familiarity with the material. That may include clinicians who routinely work in emergency, critical-care, procedural, transport, prehospital, or other environments where resuscitation knowledge is regularly used.
Before choosing renewal, ask yourself whether you can recognize common arrest and peri-arrest rhythms, explain what you are trying to accomplish at each major decision point, communicate effectively during a team resuscitation, and connect medication or electrical therapy to the patient’s condition rather than merely recalling isolated facts.
What If My ACLS Card Is Expired?
An expired card by itself does not tell you which LSE course you should choose. Your employer, licensing body, school, credentialing office, or training center may have its own requirements. The more useful questions are how long it has been since your last ACLS course, how comfortable you remain with the material, and whether the organization requiring ACLS specifies a particular pathway.

Where Does HeartCode ACLS Fit?
HeartCode ACLS is the AHA blended-learning option. The cognitive portion is completed online, followed by a required hands-on session. The AHA states that students completing HeartCode ACLS attend an instructor-led hands-on session that includes meaningful skills practice, debriefing, team-dynamics training, megacode cases, and skills testing. Successful completion leads to the same ACLS Provider Course Completion Card, which the AHA lists as valid for two years.

How to Decide Between the Three Options
- Choose ACLS Provider when you want the most complete instructor-led pathway or need more time with the material.
- Choose ACLS Update / Renewal when you have prior ACLS experience and are genuinely prepared for a focused renewal experience.
- Choose HeartCode ACLS when you prefer a blended format and will complete the required AHA online portion before attending your hands-on session.
Preparation Matters More Than the Label on the Course
The AHA specifically offers ACLS preparation resources for ECG recognition and pharmacology because weakness in either area can make successful ACLS course completion more difficult. Before class, review your ACLS precourse preparation checklist, refresh ACLS rhythm recognition, and make sure you understand the purpose of commonly encountered ACLS medications.
You should also be comfortable with foundational BLS. ACLS does not replace the fundamentals of early recognition, high-quality CPR, and timely defibrillation. Those remain central to advanced resuscitation.
Choose the Course That Gives You the Best Chance to Perform Well
The goal is not to select the shortest option. It is to arrive in a format that matches your knowledge and allows you to demonstrate the skills expected of an ACLS provider.
